  • The Laki eruption of 1783–84 was one of the most devastating in Icelandic history. From the 25-km-long volcanic fissure with 130 craters (left) gasses and ash erupted and 600 km2 of hot lava flowed. The eruption affected almost the whole northern hemisphere. The picturesque river Bláfjallakvísl, lined with moss, greets the eye in the Fjallabak nature reserve.
